Dhokra Art of India:
Dhokra is non-ferrous metal casting using the lost-wax casting technique. An art that is 4000-5000 years old. Dhokra is the most popular of all other tribal crafts. The name comes from the Dhokra tribes, the metal-workers of Bastar, Chhattisgarh. This sort of metal casting has been used in India and is still used. Dhokra is an alloy of brass, nickel and zinc that gives an antique effect to the castings. There are two main processes of lost wax casting- solid casting and hollow casting. First a mold is prepared out of wet earth, or with Lac or with a combination of bee wax, Sal resin and dhuna. Then the required design is hand created on the mold with bee-wax and Lac. It is then again covered with wet earth and is bind with iron wire. Again a layer of earth is put on the mold after which a hole is made in the mold. It is then heated which melts the wax or the Lac, and the liquid brass is filled in the mold through the hole. The mold is then left to cool down and the artwork is obtained by breaking the mud mold. All Dhokra products are traditional craft and 100% eco-friendly. Crafting a single figurine is incredibly time consuming and requires a great degree of skill and patience. Normally, a simple figurine could take anywhere between over fifteen to thirty days to make.
