The word “kantha” in Bengali means an embroidered quilt traditionally used in adorning quilts. Kantha is a style of embroidery that originates from Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India. It is usually a simple running stitch done with various colored thread on solid colored fabric. This running stitch was typically used in the embroidery, thus giving it the name ‘kantha stitch’.  Now this embroidery is popular on making fashion industry rich with ethnic designs like in scarves, sarees, tops etc.  Even furnishings such as bed covers and cushion covers are also designed by this simple kantha stitch to give your home a different dimension. Scarves with kantha embroidery are typically made of pure silk, Tussar silk or cotton.
